OGILBY, John (1600-76). [ Britannia ], London: 1698. 2° (386 x 247mm). 100 engraved strip maps by John Ogilby (Title torn with severe loss, the remaining fragment laid down on a detached sheet, maps 45 and 46 torn at edge with slight loss, maps 10, 27, 28, 51, 53 and 73 cropped at sides, some staining at corners, some maps lightly browned, occasional spotting and staining.) Contemporary reversed panelled calf (rather worn, upper cover detached). Provenance : P. J. Coleman 1812 (signature on front pastedown); "Late Lord Stafford's book" (early ink inscription on front pastedown); late 19th-century manuscript list of maps laid down on verso of first map. Second edition of Ogilby's famous road book. "This is the first survey of the roads of England and Wales... [the strip road maps] show the main roads only, with the cross-roads indicated. The distances are shown in miles along the roads, and the villages and mansions named, and in some cases the names of the residents are given": Cf. Brunet IV, 174; Chubb C; Lowndes 1719; Wing O169.
