(Some pale spotting and browning.) Contemporary ivory morocco, covers with onlays of red and black morocco with cut-out compartments inlaid with red, silver and gold foil cut and stamped to floral designs, and covered with mica, pointillé background and rich gilt tooling, spine panelled with onlays of red morocco, compartment cut-out in each onlay and with red foil flower on a gold foil background, and covered with mica, silk doublures and endleaves, edges gilt (some mica chipped, a few narrow pieces of leather between cut-outs separated, but generally in very good condition). Provenance : Princess de P. (according to Bishop, 1923, item 115); Cortlandt F. Bishop (bookplate, his sale Kende Galleries, 7 December 1948, lot 231, Emil Offenbacher agent). A FINE ROCOCO BINDING, TO WHICH HAS BEEN APPLIED A PANOPLY OF TECHNIQUES FOR DECORATING BOOKBINDINGS: GOLD TOOLING, ONLAYS AND FOIL CUT-OUTS. A well-preserved example of this fragile style of 18th century binding.
