22.7x16.5 cm. (9x6½"), stapled without covers. First Edition. Rare first edition of Moziño's account of an important voyage up the west coast of North America. Moziño was a scientist aboard the 1792 expedition of Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra Mollinado to the Nootka Sound area to resolve Anglo-Spanish difficulties. His narrative "gathered the proverbial dust in archives until one manuscript version of it was here published in 1913 by the Mexican historian Alberto Maria Carreño... It is the fullest and best account of any northwest coast group before Jewitt's florid Narrative (1815). The larger part of Moziño's Noticias is concerned with the ethnology of the Nootka Indians..." - Hill. In the preface to the 1970 translation of the work, Philip Drucker writes that the original publication "was in a skimpy edition of a few copies. To make matters worse, the published version appeared in 1913, presumably in one of the rare and brief interludes of tranquility in the seventeen-year-long Mexican Revolution. Distribution was less than good. Not many libraries in this country own copies." Hill I, p.505; Hill II, #1196. This copy lacks the final 16 pages, comprising "Descripcion del Volcan de Tuxtla". Lot Amendments Condition: Title-page soiled, creased, small hole, top corner repaired; corners creased within, light staining towards rear, good. Item number: 229288
