NORTHCOTE, JAMES. Autograph manuscript of "Fable: The Wolf and the Lamb," n.d. [c.1830?]. 1 page, folio, 320 x 190mm. (12 1/2 x 7 1/2 in.), 36 lines, titled at head, several minor marginal tears . Apparently one of Northcote's verse fables for children, commencing: "A Wolf, who craving sought for food A harmless Lamb at distance view'd And eager spring to seize the prize With furious look, and longing eyes, 'Alas! exclaim'd the trembling Lamb, 'Think, sir, how innocent I am; 'Why, cruel, should you thus pursue 'Those who can never injure you?..." Accompanied by a contemporary engraved portrait of the author. Northcote (1746-1831) published two collections entitled One Hundred Fables, Original and Selected (London, 1828) and Fables, Original and Selected. Second Series , (London, 1833), both embellished with wood engravings after Northcote and another artist, W. Harvey.
