Born in Nghe An in North-Central Vietnam. Nguyen Tu Nghiem studied in the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine (EBAI) from 1941 to 1945 and graduated from the Vietnam Fine Arts College under the supervision of Tô Ngoc Van in 1946 and 1947 in Viêt Bac.
Nguyen Tu Nghiem was specialised in both lacquer and gouache paintings. Nguyen Tu Nghiem along with Bui Xuan Phai, Nguyen Sang and Duong Bich Lien are considered as the four great masters of Vietnamese modern art. These four artists had a significant impact, both individually and collectively, on the development of new artistic languages during the era of Doi Moi - the 1986 economic renewal campaign in Vietnam.
After graduating from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, Nguyen Tu Nghiem didn't confine himself to merely reproducing nature using academic methods. Instead, he created a distinctive style that blends tradition of folk art with the trend of modern art. Nguyen Tu Nghiem's art highlights the fact that art has a universal nature, transcending geographical boundaries and cultural differences. He was widely recognised in the 1980s as the first Vietnamese modern artist to explore the formal qualities of local motifs while remaining true to the principles of modern art. Known for his vivid paintings depicting the immortal god Thanh Giong and Vietnamese zodiac signs, Nguyen Tu Nghiem was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts in 1996.
