One of the greatest hoaxes of the 19th Century, this photograph shows the moment when the Cardiff Giant was discovered. With imprint of The Cardiff Giant / Discovered at Cardiff, Oct. 16, 1869 on verso. Found by workers digging a well for farmer William C. Newell it quickly became an attraction for locals. Much speculation surrounded the discovery, with the gullible believing it was a petrified man, while others believing it was an ancient statue. The 10 foot giant was actually created by a tobacconist, George Hull. After an argument with a Reverend about the literalness of the Bible, Hull decided to create the "man" and bury it. The passage in debate was Geneis 6:4, "there were giants in the earth in those days." In the end, Hull's plan, along with his agreement with Newell to use his property, was revealed. What a coincidence a photographer was on site for the discovery! In spite of this, it is a very rare view. In the photo, a man stands over the giant, holding a shovel, with onlookers behind on higher ground. Yellow square corners on standard size mount. Condition: Minor wear to the edges of the mount.
