NEW HAMPSHIRE] Acts and laws, passed by the General Court or Assembly of His Majesties province of New-Hampshire in New-England . Boston: B.[enjamin] Green, sold by Eleazar Russel, at his shop in Portsmouth, 1716-[1719]. Full green pebbled morocco. 11 1/4 x 7 1/8 inches (28.5 x 18 cm); [2-title], iv [table, see below], 156 pp. Light binding wear, but a sound copy externally, the title with the stamp of the Bar Association faintly visible at the head, with finger soiling and very minor chipping, leaf D2 with a small silked tear, occasional small brown stains affecting text but in all a decent copy. The title bears an ex dono inscription dated April 24, 1717, indicating this was the gift of the colonist S.[amuel] Penhallow, who owned much of the land where modern Portsmouth stands. At the time of his death in 1726, he was the Chief Justice of the Superior Court, as well as the treasurer and secretary of the Province. There are extensive (and sometimes prolix) notes in a neat contemporary hand; see for example the interesting comments on criminality on D2v. It is lacking the blank Q2, omitted because of the succeeding parts bound in. This work consists of Evans 1842, for the title and pp. 1-60 (Acts and laws passed between 1696 and 1715). To this are appended Evans 1985 (which has a caption title), continuing the pagination of the previous laws, pp. p. 61-131, [1], iv [the four-page table was moved to the front of the book at some juncture); and Evans 2057 (also with caption title), pp. 133-156. Charlemagne Tower 542-544, noting only one earlier collection of New Hampshire laws, that of 1699 (10 pp.), at that time considered unique. C The New York City Bar Association
