Stikhotverniya [Poems].
Moscow: Aleksandr Semen, 1856. Large 12mo (213 x 130 mm). Half-title. Contemporary green calf, simply tooled and lettered in gilt but oxidized to black. Condition : some light soiling, old dampstaining, occasional small clean tears, pp. 83/83 with small blank section of lower margin torn away; binding scuffed, chipped at head and foot, joints weak, the upper slightly split, stitching weak. Provenance : A. V. Leontev (bookplate). first edition of nekrasov's first collection of poetry . Nekrasov was a beloved Russian poet whose reputation thrived after the October Revolution. He was the first poet who made the People the focus of his work and often portrayed dreadful social injustice to the serfs. For thirty years Nekrasov was editor of Sovremenik [The Contemporary] , to which Turgenev, Herzen, Belinskii and Dostoevsky contributed. He wrote Tolstoy that a writer must be a "teacher" and a "representative for the humble and voiceless." Lenin was an admirer and was known to quote from Nekrasov's works.
