NATURE PRINTING -- Johann Hieronymous KNIPHOF (1704-1763). Botanica in originali seu herbarium vivum . Erfurt: J.M. Funck, 1747. Volume II only, 2° (343 x 213mm). 7-line manuscript dedication on verso of first leaf, calligraphic manuscript title with nature-printed border of flowers and leaves, three blank leaves, 686 nature-printed botanical plates with manuscript polynomials and authorities in Latin, 44pp. manuscript aphabetical index at back. Contemporary vellum, upper cover with central ownership stamp of the Leopoldine Academy blocked in gilt, spine titled in gilt: 'Kniphofs Botanica. II. Secundum Characterem.' PRESENTATION COPY from the author to the Leopoldine Academy (inscribed 'Bibliothecae Illustris Academiae Imperialis Naturae Curiosorum sacrum este voluit Joh. Hieron. Kniphof ... This is the earlier one, completed with 1189 nature-printed specimens. It may be considered to be the preliminary manuscript version of the work with the similar title eventually published (with 1200 plates) between 1757 and 1764 (see lots 43-44).
