The New York State Museum began its survey of the state in 1836, with the first publications in the Natural History of New York series appearing in 1842 with the Zoology/Fauna, the first Geology and Mineralogy volumes. Flora of New York was next in 1843, followed by a four-part set on the geological districts, five volumes on agriculture, then the monumental Paleontology set published between 1847 and 1894. Lot of 4 volumes including the Introduction to the survey and state of New York, plus the Fauna. Natural History of New York. Albany: Thurlow Weed Printer to the State, 1842. Small folio, 3/4 leather, 188pp plus 2 plates of Croton Aqueduct. Then a second tp: De Kay, James E. Zoology of New-York, or the New-York Fauna. Part I. Mammalia. Albany: printed by W. & A. White and J. Visscher, 1842. 146pp, 33 b-&-w plates of Mammals. De Kay, James E. Zoology of New-York, or the New-York Fauna. Part III. Reptiles and Amphibia. Second title page for Part IV: Fishes. Albany: D. Appleton & Co. and Wiley & Putnam, printed by W. & A. White & J. Visscher, 1842. Appleton & Co. and Wiley & Putnam, printed by Carroll and Cook, 1844. Small folio, brown cloth boards with gilt device front and gilt lettering on spine, 380pp, 141 hand-colored plates. Condition: First vol. with scattered foxing and evidence of dampness, esp. the plates. Generally the text block is clean and bright. Wear to spine, lower border. Some sunning of spine. Second vol. (parts III & IV) wear to boards. Some additional damage to top of spine, which is also sunned. Text block tight and mostly clean. Very little foxing or toning evident. Plate volume with wear to leather, spine sunned. Occasional plate with scattered foxing, mostly dependent on the paper stock. Birds with several "breaks" in text block, which is not unusual for large volumes. No pages appear to have been lost, no signatures loose. Very minor foxing, mostly to frontmatter and other "dividing" pages, such as the leaf before the plates. Rear hinge going.
