Document signed ('Buonaparte') as General Commandant of Artillery of the Army of Italy to 'la Commission de l'organisation & du Mouvement des Armées de terre', Nice, '5 Messidor de la 2 e m e année' [23 June 1794] , announcing that, by order of the Committee of Public Safety, one sergeant and 16 gunners from the 4th regiment should replace those taken prisoner in the 5th company, one page, 8vo , engraved heading of the Army of Italy (slightly soiled and waterstained, short tear touching one word). Buonaparte gained command of the artillery in February 1794 during preparations for the invasion of Italy. He refers to the soldiers 'qui ont été fait prisonniers par les Espagnnols en Sardaigne il y a un an' during his failed expedition against the island of La Maddelena.
