MYERS, John. The Life, Voyages and Travels of Capt. John Myers, detailing his Adventures during Four Voyages round the World. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees. Cork: John Holster, 1817. The rare first edition, uncut in the original boards, of an Irish sailor's account of voyages to Australia and New Zealand, India and Japan, and to the American Northwest coast for furs. Myers sailed on the Jane in company with Capt. Broughton and the Chatham . They cruised the Queen Charlotte Islands and made a stay at Nootka and Cook Inlet. In 1797 and 1801 he visited Port Jackson and relates his meeting met Barrington whom he describes as "pick-pocket and chief constable." The subscribers list shows that a preponderance of the orders came from Myers' home-county of Cork. Hill 1213; Ferguson 686; Forbes 469; Howes M-933; Lada-Mocarski 73; Sabin 51631. Octavo (230 x 140mm). With the subscribers list (scattered few spots, mostly to prelims.) Uncut in the original boards (rebacked, neat repair to top corners); clamshell box. Provenance : occasional neat marginalia, dated 1849 on p. 21 – NYHS (small inkstamp to gutter near end) – Helen R. Kahn, Inc.
