* MULOCK, George Francis Arthur (1882-1963). The Charts of the Discovery Antarctic Expedition. London: The Royal Geographical Society, 1908. 8vo (248 x 157 mm). Text booklet mounted to inner front pastedown; 6 color-printed folding maps in rear pocket. Loose as issued in publisher's gilt-lettered blue cloth portfolio. FIRST EDITION. Mulock, surveyor and cartographer to the expedition, replaced Shackleton on the Discovery after he was invalided home. He "proved to be an enormous asset: he collated the cartographic data and prepared these six detailed charts of the newly discovered lands and coasts. Scott had the highest praise for him" (Rosove). The National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904, led by Capt. R.F. Scott aboard the Discovery, carried out the first major charting of Antarctica since Ross's voyage of 1841, resulting in the discovery of new land and coastline, and the earliest set of maps of any portion of the Antarctic continent. Mulock's text regards the making of the maps, which are not included in Scott's Voyage of the Discovery (1905, see lot 176) or the Discovery's Scientific Reports "(1907-1913, see lot 177). Rosove 233.A1; Spence 82. Estimate $3,000-4,000
