THE TELEGRAPH "IS NEARLY READY TO BE PUT IN OPERATION" Morse apologizes for his delay in writing, due, he confesses, to "anxieties respecting my picture [painting], the study in hours of recreation to perfect my Telegraph, (which is nearly ready to be put in operation)," and "extraordinary cares of a family nature which the state of the times has created," This has compelled him to forego writing, even to his children (Morse was a widower). But he is confident of Catherine's indulgence for "I never found in you the least particle of that uncomfortable suspicion which...loses a friend from the unfounded fear that he may already be lost...You are precisely what I supposed you to be, when I first saw you, the same guileless, confiding, lovely girl..." He writes of his planned "sketching tour in the Land of the Pilgrims, to collect the materials historical & picturesuqe for my large picture," asks if she will visit Saratoga, and mentions a wedding he attended even though, he adds, "I find my company and my pleasure in my books and studies..."
