MORANDI, Giambattista. Historia Botanica Practica, seu plantarum quae ad usum medicinae pertinent. Milan: ex typographia Petri Francisci Malatestae, 1744. 2° (410 x 252mm). Title in red and black with hand-coloured vignette. Etched additional title, 1 headpiece, 2 initials and 68 plates, all by Morandi and hand-coloured at a later date. (Small paperfault hole in plate 24, old light dampstaining to lower inner margins of about 20 plates.) Contemporary Italian mottled calf gilt, covers elaborately panelled in gilt using various roll tools, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the other compartments with repeat decoration made up from numerous decorative small tools, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (neatly rebacked, original spine laid down). Provenance : Viscount Mersey (Bignor Park book-label). A CHARMINGLY ILLUSTRATED WORK ON THE PLANTS THAT WERE THEN CONSIDERED TO BE OF USE IN MEDICINE. Little is known of Morandi other than the present work. He is responsible for both the text and the etched plates. Each plate includes up to ten plants. A second edition was published in 1761.
