Tratado de la Piedra Bezaar, y de la yerva Escuerconera. Dialogo de las Grandezas del Hierro, y de sus vortudes Medicinales. Tratado de la Nieve y del bever frio. Sevilla: Alonso Escrivano, 1574. 4to, 178 x 135 mm., modern calf, inner hinges weak, lacking Dd7-8 (the first containing a poem to Monardes and errata, the second blank), some mostly light dampstaining, occasional filled wormholes affecting a few letters, a few headlines shaved . FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, FIRST EDITION OF PARTS 3 AND 5, 5 parts in one, separately titled, continuously signed and paginated, roman and italic type, title to part 2 with woodcut of tobacco plant, 10 woodcuts of plants in part 2, of which 2 full-page, 9-line and smaller woodcut initials, woodcut printer's device on title to part 5 and at end. "First edition of Monardes's collected works on the medicinal discoveries of the New World. It includes the material given in the Dos Libros , Sevilla, 1569, and in the Segunda Parte , Sevilla, 1571, but is the first printing of the material given in the Tercera Parte and in the Dialogo del Hierro " (Hunt). Monardes, a Sevillian physician who learned about American medicinal plants through imported specimens, was the first observer to write about the American materia medica . "He was an expert botanist; and because of his careful descriptions of drugs and the tests he carried out on animals to ascertain their medicinal properties, he is considered one of the founders of pharmacognosy and experimental pharmacology" (F. Guerra, DSB). This important work, which contains the most comprehensive description of tobacco of the sixteenth century, was quickly translated into Italian, Latin, English and French; over 50 editions are recorded, This edition is quite scarce.
