Seville: Alonso Escrivano, 1574. The first complete edition of the most important early source on the botany and medicinal discoveries made in the New World. This work is particularly notable for its long illustrated description of the tobacco plant and its properties at the beginning of the second book. Monardes, an eminent Spanish doctor and botanist, "was the first physician to write of the vegetable poison curare, and his lengthy description of an even more famous American plant introduced to Europe the name 'tabaco' and 'nicotain'” (Norman). Quarto (192 x 136mm). 12 woodcut illustrations, mostly large, in the text, fine large historiated initials. (A4 with marginal repair, without final blank).
