c. late 19th century, This Kashan carpet is the work of master weaver Ustad Mohtashem and is an outstanding example of late 19th century rug weaving skill. The classic design of this room-size rug features a central medallion and a field that is divided into sections using contrasting backgrounds. It has formal corners that use an ivory background color to pick up the same color as the central medallion. This gives the antique Persian rug an overall sense of balance by connecting the various elements. The fine weave of this antique Persian Kashan Mohtashem rug combines both grand scale in the layout and precise detail in the individual motifs. One of the characteristics that makes these antique Mohtasham Kashan rugs stand out is that they have a radiant quality similar to silk rugs, only they are wool. This is accomplished by using high quality lambswool to reflect the light. This is an important and collectible Mohtasham carpet in very good condition and ready for immediate use on the floor.
