He studied art at Yale University and at the Academia de las Bellas Artes in Mexico, and spent the war years in Naval Intelligence. He moved to Paris in 1947 to pursue a painting career, and his first exhibition was at Jean Cocteau's Galerie Morihien. Noted for his textile and wallpaper designs, Mitchell worked with numerous well-known fashion designers, including Alexander 'Omar' Kiam, Norman Norell, Adele Simpson and Claude Staron. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Hanover Gallery in London and the Carstairs in New York City.
