MILLIN DE GRANDMAISON, Aubin-Louis (1759-1818). Peintures de Vases antiques vulgairement appelés Etrusques . Paris: P. Didot l'Ainé for Dubois Maisonneuve, 1808-1810. 2 volumes, 2° (575 x 430mm). Titles with engraved vignette and borders, each in two states, plain and sepia-coloured, 150 engraved plates by A. Clener, 6 double-page, all but the final plate in each volume in two states, plain and hand-coloured. (Occasional light spotting and browning of margins, without half-titles.) Contemporary green morocco gilt, covers with roll-tool border of flowers within multiple fillets and inner rococo border of shells, flowers, and twisting leaves with circles, dots and stars interspersed, gilt spine with contrasting morocco lettering-pieces, ornately tooled with fuchsias and other flowers among smaller dots and stars, gilt floral turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (lower corners of vol. II bumped). A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST ISSUE, WITH WIDE MARGINS, AND PLATES IN TWO STATES. The aim of Dubois Maisonneuve was to devote a luxury publication to the transmission of 'les singulières peintures que les anciens nous ont laissées sur de simples vases d'argile, connus sous le nom de Vases étrusques.' This was partly for the benefit of contemporary art for 'ces vases sont devenus une source féconde d'imitations ingénieuses ....' The work was dedicated to the Empress Josephine, and drew on the great collections at Malmaison, the Musée Napoleon, the Bibliothèque impériale, and the Sèvres manufactury, also of the duc de Dalmatie, Princess Gallitzin and other remarkable French collectors. The 25 parts were priced at 15 fr. each plain and 45 fr. coloured. A second issue appeared in 1816. Brunet II, 848; Blackmer 1129. (2)
