Military General Service 1793-1814, 3 clasps, Barrosa, Vittoria, Toulouse (Saml. Williams, 28th Foot), good very fine Two men of this name with the unit during the campaign, although just one lived to claim the Medal. Samuel Williams was conscripted into the Cornwall Army of Reserve by ballot on 18 August 1803, joining the 28th Foot Depot Company on 13 July 1804. Transferred to the 1st Battalion a week later he soon served in Ireland and was listed as 'Liable to serve abroad'. In July 1809 the sailed as part of the abortive Walcheren Expedition, landing on South Beveland before being withdrawn home. Sent for garrison duty at Gibraltar in January 1810, they were then posted to defend the fort at Tarifa, harassing French foraging patrols until the arrival of Lieutenant-General Graham. They joined his detachment to relieve the siege on Cadiz, culminating on the attack by the French at Barrosa. The unit was split on that day with the Light and Grenadier Companies commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Browne forming part of the luggage guard that was attacked by Ruffin's Division. They were driven from the height of Barrosa before being ordered to reform and attack uphill against cannon and musket, losing half of the 470 men in the first volley. The main section of the Battalion under Lieutenant-Colonel Belson formed on the left of Wheatley's Brigade against the French 54th Ligne. In June 1811 the 28th left Gibraltar to join Wellington's Command at Lisbon and would form part of his army crossing into Spain. On 21 June 1813 they were still with Wellington's Army and deployed at Vittoria crossing the Rio Zadorra at La Puebla and driving the French from the village of Sabijana de Alava. King Joseph with his army fled the battlefield leaving the plenty of loot and all the wagons to be claimed by the Allies. Following this they pursued the French army out of Spain and over the Pyrenees to France. Williams was next in the action at Toulouse 10 April 1814, with the 28th then returning to Ireland. He transferred to 3rd Garrison Battalion on 24 June 1815 and was discharged to pension on 26 September 1816, it being noted he suffered epilepsy in 1816. He made his application for Military General Service Medal in 1847, the first awards being sent out for distribution in February 1849. Williams died on 15 March 1849 in Probus, Cornwall; sold with copied death certificate.
