MILAN 1644 -- Racconte delle sontuose esequie fatte alla serenissima Isabella reina di Spagna nella chiesa maggiore della città di Milano il giorno xxii. Decembre dell'anno 1644 . Engraved frontispiece, two folding plates (one with short tear along fold) and 65 full-plates by GIOVANNI PAOLO BIANCHI and GIOVANNI DEL SOLE after JOHANN CHRISTOPHORUS STORER (1611-71). (Some minor mostly marginal dampstaining and soiling.) Contemporary limp vellum. A rare and lavishly illustrated funeral book commemorating the funeral obsequies of ISABEL of France (1602-1644), Queen-Consort of Philip IV, King of Spain. Elisabeth of France (1602-1644) was the eldest daughter of King Henry IV of France and his second spouse, Marie de' Medici. As a daughter of the king, she was born a Fille de France. As the eldest daughter of the king, she was known at court by the traditional honorific of Madame Royale . The plates of the catafalque in the cathedral, and of the statues, paintings, and emblems created for the exequies, were designed by Storer and engraved by Bianchi and Giovanni del Sole. Johann Christophorus Storer (1611-71) was a member of a family of artists in Constance. Storer went to Milan in 1640 where he became a pupil and colleague of Ercole Procaccini and painted frescoes in various churches in Milan, Bergamo and Pavia. The first plate shows the interior of the church with the catafalque and decorations designed by the architect FRANCESCO MARIA RICHINO.
