Beschreibung:

Michael Kvium (b. Horsens 1955) “Mediemodel” (“media model”), 1992. Triptych, and three related sketches. Signed. Kvium 92. Oil on canvas and pencil on paper. 95×330 and sheet size 32×24. (4) If you had to pinpoint any single year as defining Michael Kvium’s breakthrough on the Danish art scene, it has to be 1992. While Kvium had already had his first spectacular solo exhibition entitled “Lucias øjne” (“Lucia’s eyes”) at Horsens Art Museum in 1989, it was through the exhibition entitled “Arvtagerbilleder” (“heritage paintings”) presented by art dealer Franz Pedersen in Horsens in 1992 that the Danish art public woke up to him in earnest. With large, well-composed works, Kvium fully lives up to one of the titles of one of the other works from this period: “Erobringsbillede” (“painting of conquest”), celebrating art history with a subtle nod to itself, and demonstrating the high level of technical skill which Kvium had battled to acquire in the preceding years; with one shot, this propelled him into a league of his own on the Danish art scene. The triptych going under the hammer is from 1992 and, together with the accompanying sketches, provides a fascinating glimpse into the creative process: the figures – their hands and feet tied together, locked into their own attempts to act – are isolated in their own nakedness, which, despite their physical nudity, could well be rather more a state of mind. Kvium evokes the mortal limitations of humanity today, the power of nature over culture, and the inner and outer walls that we as individuals face. The red, blue and green colours of the bandages in the triptych are reminiscent of the Renaissance masters who used the same palette and painting style for religious renditions. In Kvium’s interpretation, however, there is no god – just a number of figures, each having to do its best to balance the Fall and fight with the demons and conditions that define the times. In this sense, the work can almost be read as an altarpiece about the basic conditions of humanity today – the individual’s struggle to become free from inherited ties and patterns, and to challenge his own blindness and that of the times. This lot is subject to Artist's Royalty. Artist’s Royalty In accordance with Danish copyright law, an additional royalty fee is to be paid for the purchase of works by contemporary Danish artist and some international artists who are either still alive, or who died within the last 70 years. × Read more Condition Condition report available on request.
