MESMER, Franz Anton (1734-1815). Mmoire sur la dcouverte du magntisme animal . Geneva and Paris: Pierre-Franois Didot le jeune, 1779. 8 o (161 x 105 mm). Contemporary mottled sheep. Provenance : Socit de l'Harmonie Universelle (stencil incorporating the royal arms and inscription on front flyleaf: "Appartenant la Socit del'harmonie de france, et faisant parte de sa Bibliothque"). FIRST EDITION OF THE MANIFESTO OF MESMERISM. IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE SOCIT DE L'HARMONIE DE FRANCE, an organization founded by Nicolas Bergasse to promote orthodox mesmerism. "Since his time the investigation of how to release subconscious states through auto- and hetero-suggestion has continued, and the whole field of extra-sensory perception and spritualism has affinity with mesmerism. Much more important scientifically were the experiments of Braid in Scotland and Charcot in Paris, and the development of psychoanalysis: Freud's first experiments were on hypnotic patients; and Jung was particularly close to mesmerism in his belief that consciousness could transcend time and space" (PMM). Mesmerism presented itself to the French as a "natural" medicine at a time when the cult of nature and the popular enthusiasm for science had reached a peak. Numerous Parisians fell into 'crisis' at the touch of Mesmer's hand and recovered with a new sense of being at harmony with the world. His followers, the mesmerists, published numerous case histories documenting their claims. "They produced an enormous barrage of propaganda--at least 200 books and pamphlets, more than were written on any other single subject during the decade before the opening phase of the Revolution in 1787" (DSB). The disciples of Mesmer, under the leadership of Nicolas Bergasse (see lot 672) and Guillaume Kornmann, formed a Masonic-like secret society, the Socite de l'Harmonie Universelle, to promote orthodox mesmerism. Its popularity spread to many provincial affiliates throughout France, and by 1789 the Society had attracted 430 Parisian members. Mesmer shared great financial profits from the Socit, which claimed exclusive proprietorship of his deepest secrets. See Darnton, Mesmerism , pp. 3-81; En franais dans le texte 171; Garrison-Morton 4992.1; Grolier Medicine 47 (this copy exhibited); Heirs of Hippocrates 1013; Hunter-Macalpine, pp. 480-82; NLM/Blake, p.302; PMM 225; Tischner 10; Waller 6505; Norman M4.
