MENASSEH BEN ISRAEL. Conciliator... Esto es conciliador o dela conveniencia de los lugares de la S. Escriptura, que repugnantes entre si parecen. Frankfurt, [Amsterdam]: 1632-1651. 4 parts in 2 volumes, 4to, modern sheep antique, volume I slightly larger than vol. II; lacks *1-*3 in part I and blank D4 in part II. Provenance : Contemporary ink inscription on title: "Collegis Paris Soc. Jesv", thus indicating that this Jewish work was owned and possibly studied by Jesuits. The second part was printed by Ravensteyn in Amsterdam in 1641; the third and fourth parts were printed by the author's son Samuel ben Israel Soeiro, in 1650-1651. Parts two to four bear the printing mark of Menasseh (Yaari 58). Wolf I, IV, 1463; III, p. 458, Rodr.Castro; 551, 552; Rib.Santos, 338; Palau, 162796; Cat. Menasseh, 16; Kayserling, 69; Den Boer, Catalogue [...] Ets Haim/Livraria Montezinos, n. 401-404. The four-part work by Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel reconciling apparently discordant passages in the Bible. The entire work was written in Spanish. The first volume, on the Pentateuch, was also translated into Latin by the scholar Dionysius Vossius and was published in Amsterdam in 1633. Through his Conciliador Menasseh offered a broad insight into rabbinic Judaism, aimed at both his fellow converso readers and at interested Christian scholars. (2)
