Medals from the Collection of Gordon Everson A campaign group of three to Colonel H. J. J. Middleton, 3rd Bengal Cavalry (Skinner’s Horse), late East Kent Regiment South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (Lieut. H. J. Middleton, 2/3rd Foot); India General Service 1895-1902, 3 clasps, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Samana 1897, Tirah 1897-98 (Major H. J. J. Middleton, 3rd Bl. Cavy.); Delhi Durbar 1903, silver, with ribbon buckle, good very fine (3) £600-800 Footnote Herbert John James Middleton was born at Fakenham, Norfolk, on 31 March 1856, and was appointed Second Lieutenant in the 2nd East Norfolk Militia on 3 April 1875. He was appointed Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Foot on 28 October 1876, and served with that regiment in the Zulu war of 1879, being present at the action of Inyezane and occupation of Etshowe (Medal with Clasp). He transferred to the Bengal Staff Corps in October 1880, becoming Captain in October 1887, and Major in October 1896. He served with the 3rd Bengal Cavalry on the North West Frontier of India in 1897-98, including the operations on the Samana and in the Kurram Valley during August and September (Medal with two Clasps); also in Tirah, 1897-98 (Clasp). He was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel and Substantive Colonel of Skinner’s Horse on 28 October 1902, was placed on the unemployed list in March 1913, and retired on 12 April 1914. Colonel Middleton died in London on 24 November 1934.
