M'COSH, John. Topography of Assam... Printed by order of Government. Calcutta: G.H. Huttmann, Bengal Military Orphan Press, 1837. 4 lithographic views by and after M'Cosh, printed by T. Black's Asiatic Lithographic Press, lithographic plan and lithographic table. [ Bound with :] D.A. MACLEOD. A Sketch of the Medical Topography of Bishnath, and its immediate neighbourhood; with an account of the diseases generally prevailing in Assam. Calcutta: G.H. Huttmann, Bengal Military Orphan Press, 1837. 2 works in one volume, 8° (237 x 154mm). Contemporary brown polished calf, covers with gilt-rule border (neatly rebacked to style, corners rounded). A rare pair of works with much interesting information. M'Cosh (or Mc'Cosh), who had worked as medical officer for two years in Assam, based his work on personal observation, the 'latest Statistical Reports' returned by the District Officers, as well as the manuscript accounts kept by other residents in Assam. Macleod's work continues in much the same vein, but includes reports of the various prevalent diseases, attempted cures (both 'native' and European) and ends with a recommendation that 15 years service in Assam should be treated as the equivalent of 20 years service anywhere else.
