FIRST EDITION account by a sergeant who fought throughout the Kaffir and Basuto wars 1850-53, and highly critical of some of the officers. With the contemporary ownership inscription of L[ucy?] C. Lloyd, expert on the Bushmen, fl. 1889. Mendelssohn I, 945. Together with 4 other works on the Kafir Wars: Rev. James READ The Kat River Settlement in 1851: described in A Series of Letters published in "The South African Commercial Advertiser." Cape Town: A.S. Robertson, 1852. 8° (220 x 140mm). Steel-engraved frontispiece. (Inserted from another copy?). Red morocco gilt, appendix, errata slip. FIRST EDITION in which the author lays much blame on unjust magistrates for the Kaffir rebellion.
