Mayo (Antoine Malliarakis) (Greek 1905-1990) Les Cenci, a set of nine Pen and ink Each signed lower right 27 x 21cm (10½ x 8¼ in.) (9) Unframed During the early 1930s, the French dramatist and actor Antonin Artaud realised his concept behind the theory of Surrealist theatre called the Theatre of Cruelty. The theatre launched an attack on the spectators' subconscious in an attempt to release deep-rooted fears and anxieties that are rmally suppressed. Artaud believed that by taking this unconventional approach the audience would be forced to view themselves and their natures without the shield of civilization. In order to shock the audience the extremes of human nature were graphically portrayed on stage, for example madness and perversion. These shows were essentially an antiliterary revolt, reducing actors to screams, inarticulate cries and symbolic gestures to portray their characters. Artaud's only production, to illustrate his concept of the Theatre of Cruelty, was Les Cenci (1935). The present lot includes the original drawings produced by Antoine Mayo for the production and gives a raw insight into the unusual production.
