MAYER, Luigi. Views in Turkey in Europe and Asia, comprising Romelia, Bulgaria, Walachia, Syria, and Palestine selected from the collection of Sir Robert Ainslie . London: by the Proprietor, William Watts printed by S. Gosnell, 1801 [watermarked 1798-1805; plates dated 1780-1806] 3 parts in one volume, large 2° (543 x 410mm.), 3 printed titles, 1p. list of subscribers (with 122 names), double-column text in English and French, engraved dedication, 2 additional engraved titles and 60 (27,20,13) hand-coloured aquatint plates, by William Watts after Mayer, all with ruled and grey wash borders. Contemporary marbled boards (skilfully rebacked and recornered with calf), armorial bookplate of W. Ord LARGE PAPER COPY. VERY SCARCE, the first edition of Mayer's views of the Ottoman Dominions , engraved by Watts, who was a pupil of Paul Sandby the first to practice aquatint in England in 1775. Watt's two plates dated April 1, 1780 and May 1st 1782 are therefore amongst the earliest English aquatints and have superior colouring to the later issues. Many of the same plates reappear in later editions with the captions and imprints altered and the engraved lines for the wash borders round the views removed. It seems Bowyer took over Watts' original rival (?) work (see lot ...). Colas 2017; Abbey Travel II pp.322-3
