MAXIMILIAN I (Archduke of Austria, King of Germany from 1486, Holy Roman Emperor, 1493-1519). Autograph letter signed ('Maxi[milian]us'), addressed to the Governor of Holland, n.p. [Ghent?], incompletely dated, 'Escript de n[ost]re main Salmedy lan lxxxiii' [1483], 10 lines in French written in brown ink, one page, 130 x 215 mm , address panel in autograph on verso. Maximilian writes as Regent of the Low Countries for his son, Philip III ('the Fair'), referring to an instruction sent to him the same day by the Governor's maître d'hôtel ('mesterdostel'), requiring him to pay those [soldiers] of Holland sent for the [relief ?] of Upper Germany, and commanding him to raise a loan of 300 livres for this purpose before Maximilan's arrival in Holland, 'No[u]s vo[u]s ordinnons et requirons que troves moien de fere ung pret de troes cens L[ivres] jousques a mon advenement a Hollande'. There must be no deficiency for all will be lost if they go to Cleves. A postscript beneath the signature recommends the bearer of the letter. In 1477 Maximilian, son of Frederick III, married Maria, Duchess of Burgundy, daughter of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy and ruler of the Low Countries. This alliance was to transform the fortunes of the House of Hapsburg. From 1477 Maximilian ruled jointly with Maria over Flanders and the Low Countries, and, following her sudden death in 1482, acted as regent for their son, Philip III. The Treaty of Arras, signed in March 1482/83, brought peace with France, leaving him free to tackle the unrest in Holland, and to reassert his authority in Germany, where his father's indifference had brought the country's fortunes to its lowest ebb. Maximilian's itinerary for 1483 appears not to have survived, but in other years his presence is recorded at Brussels, Ghent, Louvain, Malines and other towns in Flanders, and less frequently in Holland. The letter is apparently unpublished. Letters in the hand of Maximilian are rare, and the period from the death of Charles the Bold until the accession of Philip the Fair is among the least documented in the history of the Low Countries (Gachard, Lettres inédites de Maximilien, Duc d'Autriche, sur les affaires des Pays Bas, 1478 - 1488 , Brussels, 1851).
