(6½ x 4¼ in.) including mount, some overall light foxing to mount. A seated portrait of Marx, with his left hand rigid in his lap and his right hand inside the lapel of his jacket, inscribed on verso in a slightly shaky hand: "Madame James M. Williamson with the wishes for a happy new year Karl Marx Ventnor 11 January 1883." "The German social and political philosopher whose writings form the theoretical basis of Communism. He attacked the injustices of the early industrial society, frequently urging aggressive policies. Exiled from most continental centers, he settled permanently in London in 1849. Marx long lived in poverty so bitter that it caused the death of several of his children. This photo by Mayall was inscribed just two months before Marx's death to the wife of his physician on the Isle of Wight"--W.M. This photograph was forwarded to him by his daughter Eleanor on January 9th at his request: "If you could find them you might send me two photogramms. One of them I have promised to forward to Madame Williamson." He inscribed the message to the doctor's wife on the day he heard of Jenny's death at Argenteuil. It is a telling gesture of the measure of Marx's regard for the doctor and his wife, of his amiability even at such a time of crisis and, finally, his easy relationship with the English bourgeoisie, whose style he came to share in his old age.
