Mark Grotjahn Untitled (Blue Face Grotjahn) 2005 Oil on linen. 61 x 49 1/8 in. (154.9 x 124.8 cm). Signed and titled “Untitled (Blue Face Grotjahn) Mark Grotjahn” on the overlap.
Provenance Blum & Poe, Los Angeles Exhibited Los Angeles, Blum & Poe, Mark Grotjahn September 9 - October 8, 2005; New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, Whitney Biennial 2006: Day for Night, March 2 - May 28, 2006 Literature LA Weekly “State of the Art ‘05: A field guide to artists, gallerists, curators et al, from Aitken to Zittel. Part 1: The Rev. Ethan Acres to Mark Grotjahn” Thursday, October 27, 2005; M. Ned Holte, “Mark Grotjahn,” ArtForum, XLIV, No. 3, November 2005, pp. 259-260 (illustrated); C. Isles and P. Vergne, Whitney Biennial 2006: Day for Night, New York, 2006, p. 376; W. Robinson “Artnet News: Whitney Biennial for Kids,” Artnet Magazine, March 7, 2006; J. Tumlir, “Mark Grotjahn: Big Nose Baby and the Moose,” Flash Art, Vol. XL No. 252, January - February 2007, pp. 82-85 (illustrated) Catalogue Essay "The “Face Paintings” allow me to express myself in a way that the “Butterflies” don’t. I have an idea as to what sort of face is going to happen when I do a “Face Painting,” but I don’t exactly know what color it will take, or how many eyes it’s going to have, whereas the “Butterflies” are fairly planned out. They’re still intuitive, but I generally know where they are going. It’s a different kind of freedom, a different kind of expressionism. It’s personal without being overtly personal."
