Beschreibung:

Maritime: A bronze signalling cannon, English, c1780, with star stamped decoration and numbered 7, with touch hole and trunnion. Bore 1ins. Length 21ins. The Count Ernest Schimmelmann (MAI-010) - In 1781 a 1400 ton, Danish East India Company ship, under the command of Count Ernest Schimmelmann, left Europe with a cargo composed mainly of 114 iron cannon as well as Swedish silver specie. Bound for China and the Far East, her voyage - like so many - never extended beyond the Cape Verde Islands where she wrecked on 24th April 1781 on the Isle of Maio. Although the ship was lost, members of the crew were fortunate to survive according to contemporary reports and most cargo was salvaged. Many of the timbers of this ship which were washed ashore were purchased by the local bishop for use in the construction of a new church on Maio. Ex. Sothebys
