MARIE ANTOINETTE (Queen of France, 1774-1793). Autograph letter (third person) to M. de Clugny (Contrleur Gnral des Finances), n.p., n.d. [1776], one page, 8vo (some light foxing). Provenance . M. de Clugny; and by descent. An exercise in royal patronage. The Queen informs Clugny that she has forewarned the King about 'l'affaire de richard', for whom a position should be found soon; she herself 'preferer celui d'Administrateur des poste pour Richard [...] comme Richard a toujour desire etre Administrateur, c'est l'arrangement qui pourra le mieux lui convenir'. The Queen ends by commending also Messieurs de Saluces, 'qui sont bien interessant par leurs malheurs'. Marie Antoinette was later blamed, along with much else, for the replacement of the reforming Turgot with the corrupt Clugny. The manner of her report of the affair in a letter to her mother - 'M. Turgot a t renvoy .., et M. de Clugny le remplacera. J'avoue ma chre maman que je ne suis pas fache de ces dparts, mais je ne m'en suis pas mle' - while establishing her innocence, gives a good impression of the naivety and frivolity of the 21 year old queen.
