Maqbool Fida Husain (Indian, 1915-2011)Untitled (Mother Teresa with children) signed lower right and numbered 69/175 lower left Lithograph 92.4 x 63.7cm (36 3/8 x 25 1/16in).FootnotesProvenance Heffel Auctions, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 25th February 2010, lot 156; Acquired by the vendor from the above. Husain made a series of lithographs titled 'Tribute to Mother Theresa,' shortly after she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, for her work among the sick and impoverished in Calcutta. These early prints were mostly in white, grey, brown and black, although her symbolic blue and white sari was a constant feature. Her face was never shown and was replaced by a black void. This was done deliberately by Husain as he thought her to be symbolic of all mothers, and therefore ought to not be identified with just one human being.
