MANUSCRIPT--SPANISH 16th CENTURY]. Carta executoria [patent of nobility] granted to Juan de Soto and Andres de Soto by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Castille and Leon. Valladolid, 6 June 1546. Manuscript on vellum, 42 leaves. Single columns of 40 lines; ruled in red ink, justification (210 x 150mm.) ; written in a round Spanish hand. Two full-page miniatures, three illuminated borders, one large illuminated initial, 34 words or phrases and 53 initials in gold on red grounds introducing sections, pointing fists in margins. 320 x 220mm., original binding of gold-stamped leather, pink silk doublures, lacking eight blue silk and eight red silk ties; remains of braided silk bookmarks; lacking seal; with two red velvet panels, evidently from a book jacket, embroidered with the coats of arms of the father and the mother, as depicted on the opening page of text, and with remains of embroidered inscriptions. MINIATURES The miniatures were added in 1547 on blank or nearly blank leaves, now detached; both are signed "D. fecit A[nn] 1547." One miniature depicts Andres de Soto with St. Andrew; the other Gaspar de Soto with the Three Kings and the Holy Family. On the last page an illuminated border on vellum has been cut out and pasted over the border painted on the page.
