MANNER OF DONATELLO (italian 1386-1466) VIRGIN AND CHILD Painted stucco relief, with gilt and polychrome architectural frame with arch-top With frame: 57 3/8 x 37 1/2 in. (145.7 x 95.3cm) provenance: Sotheby's, London, sale of December 9, 2005, lot 48. Private Collection, New York, New York. note: Donatello's stucco relief model of the Virgin and Child was very popular in the 15th century. It is also known as the Verona Madonna . It is believed that the prototype version in stucco, formerly with pigment, was on the outside of a house at the corner of the Vicolo delle Fogge in Verona, though the Verona Madonna was produced in somewhat large numbers in terracotta. Surviving casts of this model were likely produced during Donatello's stay in Padua circa mid-1400s. The present work follows the composition of the Verona Madonna . Related relief sculptures of this model are in The Victoria & Albert Museum and The Norton Simon Museum.
