MAGGIO, Pietro. Le Guerre Festive nelle Reali Nozze de' serenissimi, e cattolici Re di Spagna Carlo Secondo, e Maria Luisa di Borbone. Palermo: Guiseppe la Barbera, Tomaso Rummolo and Orlando, 1680. 2° (291 x 210mm.). Etched frontispiece, 11 full-page etched illustrations of the competitors, 3 large folding etched plates. (Two clean tears to folding plate of the 'Gran Teatro', waterstain at bottom corner of last few pages.) Contemporary vellum with loop and bead ties (slightly soiled, lower tie lacking bead). Provenance: unidentified blind ownership stamp on frontispiece and title. The work records the festive tournament held over five days in 1680 at Palermo, to celebrate the marriage of Charles II of Spain and the Two Sicilies to Marie-Louise d'Orléans. The principal nobles of Sicily, dressed in medieval-style armour, staged mock-chivalric battles in a specially-built wooden theatre modelled on the Circus Maximus in Rome. The plates of the competitors are by Giovanni Battista Mansella, and the large folding plate of the theatre is by a local artist, Paolo Amato The other two folding plates show the daily procession to the palace. Lipperheide Si 30 (requires only 10 illustrations and 1 plate); Palau 147163 (requires only 12 etchings).
