Boone, 1852. 2 volumes, 8 o (220 x 145 mm). Engraved folding map and 13 lithographed plates after T. Huxley and others (minor foxing to some plates). Original blind-stamped cloth, spines gilt-lettered (some light dampstaining). Provenance : J.C. Hammet (early ink stamp on front free endpaper); J. Andrews (bookseller's label). FIRST EDITION. "A very important voyage of exploration and scientific research" (Ferguson). John MacGillivray served as the chief naturalist on the Rattlesnake. The voyage was part of a series of hydrographical expeditions undertaken by the Admiralty--starting with John Lort Stokes surveying trip on the Beagle and continued by Francis Price Blackwood on the Fly and the Bramble --to chart the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the northern and southern coastlines of New Guinea. Other ports visited were Funchal, Madeira; Rio de Janeiro; Simon Bay, South Africa; Port Louis, Mauritius; Hobart Town Tasmania; Sydney, New South Wales; Bay of Islands, New Zealand; Stanley, Falkland Islands; and Horta, Fayal, the Azores. The valuable narrative of William Carron, botanist of E.B. Kennedy's expedition for the exploration of the Caoe York Peninsula, and the statements made by Jackey-Jackey (Kennedy's aboriginal servant) are also included.
