MACARTNEY, Charles (1886-1958) -- A 1p. t.l.s. by Macartney, dated "The Wicket," Devonshire Street, (22)., Chatswood, Sydney, N.S.W., Australia, July 12th 1958, to Robin McConnell: "I enclose herewith a postcard which I think might fit the bill ... it demonstrates the off-drive -- a common enough stroke amongst batsmen, but who do not employ it sufficiently in order to compile runs at a rate which the spectators appreciate," he advises him against reading to many books on cricket: "It is the practical that will make a cricketer -- not a theorist. Observation is the best teacher;" together with the postcard of himself signed on the reverse. (2)
