Greek type 3:84, roman type 2a:82, 55 lines and pagination. Initial spaces with guide-letters, dolphin-and-anchor device on title (A2) and at end (A3). (Title lightly soiled, neat repaired tear in second leaf, small wormhole, marginal dampstain in a few leaves.) Early 17th-century English calf, sides panelled in blind with arbesque ornament at centre, retaining 16-17th-century flyleaves (rebacked, light wear at extremities). Provenance : early Greek annotations -- Edinburgh, purchase note date 9 November 1621 -- John Rogers 1734 (his and other inscriptions washed from title) -- bibliographical note on flyleaf signed J.H.C. -- Marchese Roberto Ridolfi (bibliographer and editor of La Bibliofili ; bookplate). SECOND EDITION IN GREEK of Lucian's Dialogues and the EDITIO PRINCEPS of the Philostratean texts and Callistratus. The two works entitled Icones by the Philostrati of Lemnos are purported descriptions of pictures in a Neapolitan collection, in whose imitation Callistratus wrote his descriptions of fourteen statues; they are of considerable importance for the study of classical art history.
