Nicholson ... reduced from a series of portraits from life, executed for the Agricultural Museum of the University of Edinburgh, by Mr W. Shiels . London: [Wilson and Ogilvy for] Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longmans, [1840]-1842. 14 parts in 2 volumes bound in one, 4° (424 x 321mm). Half-titles. 56 hand-coloured lithographic plates heightened with gum arabic by Fairland after William Nicholson after paintings by William Shiels (Some variable spotting, one text leaf with neat marginal repair.) Contemporary green morocco gilt by J. Wright, covers with broad borders composed of strapwork rolls, fillets and other rolls, gilt board edges, roll-tooled gilt turn-ins, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in one, the others elaborately decorated with floral, foliate and star tools, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION, BOUND FROM THE PARTS. Low's The Breeds of Domestic Animals ... is divided into five separate sections, which cover the horse, the ox, the sheep, the goat, and the hog. Within each section 'The descriptions are preceeded by a full history of the wild and domesticated races so far as known. The two most remarkable circumstances in the history of the Horse are the character of the British race-horse and the escape of the horse from human control in Spanish America' (Wood).
