Long Service Medals from the Collection formed by John Tamplin Seven: Lieutenant-Colonel Edgar Ernest Spencer, Ceylon Light Infantry, late 21st Battalion London Regiment and Machine Gun Corps 1914-15 Star (Lieut, 21/Lond. R.); British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. oak leaf (Major); Defence and War Medals; Coronation 1953, these unnamed; Efficiency Decoration, G.V.R., Ceylon, reverse engraved, ‘Captain E. E. Spencer C.L.I.’, mounted court style for wear, fine and better (7) £180-220 Footnote Edgar Ernest Spencer was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 21st (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles) on 21 May 1913 and was advanced to Lieutenant in August 1914. He later served with the Machine Gun Corps as a Temporary Major and was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 4 January 1917). He was promoted to Captain in the London Regiment in April 1917. During 1918 he served as an Instructor in the M.G.C. Captain Spencer resigned his commission on 22 April 1920 and was granted the rank of Major. After the war he lived in Ceylon, working with the firm of Whittall & Co., and eventually becoming a partner. Latterly he was a member of the Planers’ Association of Ceylon and in 1946 he was Chairman of the Ceylon Estates Proprietary Association. Spencer joined the Ceylon Light Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1927. As a Captain he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (Ceylon), this published in the Ceylon Government Gazette of 4 May 1934. During the Second World War he served as Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the 3rd Battalion Ceylon Light Infantry. Sold with original commission document appointing Spencer a 2nd Lieutenant in the Ceylon Light Infantry (1927); also with copied photograph and research.
