Autograph letter signed to biographer Merle Johnson about his yet to be published book "The Scarlet Plague."
Glen Allen, Ca: 20 June 1910. 2 quarto pages on lined paper (260 x 195 mm). Condition: folds, light thumbsoiling, small punctures to upper left corner. "I've got a twenty-thousand word yarn … I kill off in it only something like five billion human beings … It is a pseudo-scientific story dealing wih the things that happen in the twenty-first century when a new micro-organic enemy smote mankind and left only several survivors. Its interesting reading, popular, but not at all tragic nor really bluggy. Unfortunately its only 21000 words long … Have just had a visit from the Stork - a girl. Sincerely yours, Jack London" London refers here to The Scarlet Plague published in 1915. an excellent association letter. Merle Johnson is an important figure in the history of book collecting; High Spots in American Literature remains an important guide. Sadly, the daughter mentioned in this letter died 38 hours after she was born, this letter evidently written in the interim. Not in Letters.
