Si aggiungono in questa Impressione alcune cose inedite . Livorno: Matteo Strambi, 1766. Two volumes bound in one, 4 o (205 x 145 mm). 7 engraved plates (6 folding) one by ANTONIO LAPI after GIOVANNI LAPI one by FACIO BARARDI after GIUSEPPI RUGGIERI and one by JOS. SILINI after PASCALE BACCIONI. (Some pale browning.) 19th-century quarter calf, morocco lettering-piece (some light rubbing). Provenance : Capuchins at Livorno (stamps and duplicate stamp on title). Aubert collects numerous funeral orations and descriptions of celebrations upon the death of FRANCIS I (1708-1765), Holy Roman Emperor, in Livorno and nearby towns such as Siena, Pisa and Lucca, some of which had appeared previously by other Livorno presses. Most notable among the orations is that of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Castello (p.35 in vol. 1) who succeeded Adam Bondi as cantor of the Jewish congregation in Leghorn. Castello is believed to be the Jewish scholar with whom Gotthold Ephraim Lessing conversed during his scientific tour in the company of Duke Leopold of Brunswick. The Duke proclaimed upon meeting him, "Here we have one even greater than Mendelssohn - of far purer metaphysics." The work prints numerous poems, including several in Hebrew, and after the section of printed poems read in Siena on 22 December 1765, is a MANUSCRIPT FAIR COPY by CATERINA PERFETTI DAMIANI, 14½ pages, entitled "Composizioni fatte in occasione di Catafalco la morte di... Francesco I... nella Chiesa Metropolitana di Siena il di. 19 Nbre 1765." Epigrams and sonnets read at this occasion are transcribed. The Feltrinelli copy had only 6 plates.
