Type 1:110R (first state). 31 7- TO 14-LINE INITIALS, EXECUTED IN THREE DIFFERENT STYLES BY CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN ARTISTS : 3/1v with large gilt initial white-vine branch and color decoration with marginal extensions, 11 white-vine branch initials illuminated in gold and colors, 11 initials in gold leaf on blue, pink and green grounds with delicate white filigree infill, 8 other gilt initials on colored ground, first initial drawn in outline with later red ruled frame, book summaries with alternating red and blue two line initials and paragraph marks (Some staining or spotting at beginning and end, intermittently some minor mostly marginal spotting, minor wormhole affecting first and leaves.) Bound for Lord Sunderland in early gold-tooled 18th-century red morocco over pasteboard (some scuffing to sides and corners, spine darkened with light chipping, joints cracked but cords firm). Provenance : a few early manuscript corrections; Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland (1674-1722, shelf-mark C1:16 on front pastedown, his sale Puttick and Simpson, 1 December 1881, lot 7447); acquired by Ellis and White; Arthur Machen (acquired for Arthur Machen by Joseph Martini at The Anderson Auction Company, sale 14 and 15 December 1909, lot 399). Second or third edition, the first dated edition, and among the earliest books printed at Venice. Vindelinus continued the printing shop of his brother Johannes, first printer at Venice, after Johannes's early death at the end of 1469. Johannes had completed only 3 editions and part of a fourth before his death, and the Livy is probably the second book printed by Vindelinus alone. The Spira edition follows the Sweynheym and Pannartz edition of about 1469, and it probably follows the Ulrich Han edition printed in 1470 (before 3 August). PRINTED AT THE FIRST PRESS IN VENICE WITHIN A YEAR OF ITS ESTABLISHMENT. The sheets for this copy with large initials executed in three different contemporary styles, were presumably selected in the 18th century from three sets to make up this fine copy.
