[Literature] Garland, Hamlin Back-Trailers from the Middle Border New York: The Macmillan Company, 1928. First edition. 8vo. 379 pp. Inscribed by Hamlin on half-title and end of forward. With a gift inscription to "J.S." (presumed Julian Street) from a "S.W.C." on the recto of the frontispiece. Decorative black cloth; ruled in red; gilt and color inlay; stamped in gilt and red; top and bottom edges trimmed, fore-edge untrimmed; pictorial endpapers. Lacking dust-jacket; gilt lettering on spine dulled, very light toning towards margins in text. . "One of the chief honors gained by back-trailing was the friendship of Theodore Roosevelt, a friendship shared by Julian Street," inscribed by Garland on the half-title. Julian Street (1879-1947) was an American author, reporter, and friend of Theodore Roosevelt, writing a biography of him in 1915, "The Most Interesting American."
