Liston (John).- A group of nine prints of the comic actor John Liston, with William Ward's mezzotint portrait after John Jackson (1778-1831), and six others of Liston in character, including Richard Dighton's 'Mr Liston, in Love Law & Physic', Thomas McLean's 'Mr Liston in the character of Grojan in 'Quite Correct'', 'Mr Liston in the Character of Dominie Sampson in Guy Mannering', 'Mr Liston in the Character of Lubin Log in Love, Law & Physic', 'Mr Liston, Characters of: [six characters on one sheet]', G E Madeley's 'Mr Liston, as Billy Lackaday, in Sweethearts & Wives', E. Scriven's 'Mr Liston as Caper', and together with the lithograph 'Paul Pry's "Winter Engagement". or Just going to "drop in", etchings, engravings, lithographs, one mezzotint, some with hand-colouring, various sizes, largest 290 x 245 mm. (11 1/2 x 9 3/4 in), all under glass, some trimmed, occasional surface dirt, spotting and browning, [circa 1810s and 1820s], (9). ⁂ The English comedian born in London, was said to have accidentally found out that his forte was comedy, after several dismal failures in tragic parts, some of them in support of Mrs Siddons.
