Lot of 7, each with a separate author, some with envelopes. Letters span 1863-1866 and feature observations on Lincoln, Civil War politics, and Reconstruction. Several letters contain fiery patriotic ruminations representing predominantly Union sentiments. Together the letters paint a portrait of a war-weary and deeply divided populace. Highlights include, in small part: Charles Henry Gere, 10th Maryland Volunteer Infantry, 8pp, writing on the eve of the 1864 election: "Tomorrow's sun will dawn upon one of the most important days in our country's history. It fills one with indignation to think how many ignoramuses and traitors (the two classes that make up the so called Democratic party) will deliberately vote for the destruction of the Union....Another presidential election will be held 4 years hence, I doubt not under the auspices of a new union more glorious & free than any the world has yet seen. But there are rivers of blood yet to be shed before its consummation I fear." Asst. Surgeon John Reed, 115th Ohio Infantry, 8pp, following the assassination of Lincoln, writes: "But by this devilish deed of malice the Rebels have destroyed the best true friend they had in the loyal ranks, and have aroused the fast subsiding ire of the great nation and now I think they will have to take such terms, only, as traitors and rebels should receive at the hand of justice....On Wednesday the 19th the funeral ceremonies of the president were celebrated here [Nashville] with much feeling and considerable display. There was a lengthy procession of the military, secret orders, fire companies and citizens, and it was easy to see that the ceremonies were attended with more solemnity than is generally displayed on such occasions. Everyone seemed as though they had lost a personal friend...." Letter from a Washington, DC, government employee to a relative discussing his racist discontent with the direction of Reconstruction and civil rights, and the changing nature of Washington society: "Rouse your indifferent neighbor, strengthen your weak one and send those men who would turn you into vassals to a Black aristocracy out of their places and substitute for them those who believe government is "A White Man's Government...." Condition: Generally good.
